How to Prepare for Your Free Closet Design Consultation

Ninety minutes with a designer goes further if you spend twenty minutes preparing.

1. Count what you own

Hanging items (short and long), folded items, shoes, bags, and anything bulky. Designers size hanging rods by the inch, and 100 hangers need about 100 inches of rod.

2. Note what does not work today

The rod that is too high, the shelf you cannot reach, the dresser blocking the door. Problems produce better designs than wish lists.

3. Decide who uses the space

Two people sharing a walk-in need separate zones. Kids' closets need adjustable heights.

4. Save three inspiration photos

Houzz, Pinterest and Instagram are fine. The designer will translate the look into what your budget allows.

5. Pick a finish direction

White, wood tone or painted color. Bring a paint chip or a photo of your floors and trim.

6. Set a budget range, not a number

Designers design to a range. Saying $5,000 to $8,000 gets you options; saying "as cheap as possible" gets you wire shelving.

7. Think about lighting

Is there an outlet in or near the closet? LED lighting is the most-requested upgrade, and hardwiring needs an electrician.

8. Ask about the extras

Hampers, valet rods, jewelry inserts, belt and tie racks, pull-down rods, and shoe fences. Cheaper to add now than later.

9. Prepare your questions

Use our 12 questions to ask a closet company.

10. Plan for the old closet

Decide whether you want the company to remove existing shelving and whether you will paint before installation.
