Published ranges run about $175 to $1,800 per linear foot; reach-ins from roughly $1,900 for a six-foot space installed and walk-ins from about $5,800 to $33,000. Strengths: the broadest finish library, strong design talent, wall-hung systems that look light, a real showroom you can visit. Watch for: longer waits in spring and fall, a non-transferable warranty, and premium pricing on every tier. Best for: Roland Park, Ruxton, Ellicott City and Annapolis dressing rooms where finish and design matter most.

Closets by Design

Where: Baltimore West franchise for the metro; a separate Washington franchise covers Montgomery and Prince George's. No public showroom. Tier: Value to mid. About $150 to $400 per linear foot; reach-ins $1,100 to $3,000, walk-ins $1,800 to $7,000. The 2026 franchise disclosure lists an average sale near $5,700 and a close rate of about 51 percent of appointments. Strengths: floor-based systems standard, four finish tiers, fast scheduling, financing. Watch for: the perpetual 40-percent-off promotion (compare the net price, not the discount), in-home sales pressure, franchise-to-franchise quality variance. Closet Factory

Where: Showroom by appointment at 1405 Tangier Drive in Middle River, serving Cecil through Anne Arundel and Frederick. Tier: Mid to premium, with a strong wood and painted offering. Strengths: local manufacturing, custom millwork capability, good for offices and wall beds. Best for: painted built-ins, home offices and wood-look walk-ins in Towson, Catonsville and Harford County.

Closet America

Where: Factory and showroom in Landover, serving Baltimore and Washington. Tier: Mid. Strengths: builds locally, promises one-day install, consistently high review scores, financing with low monthly payments, and a $100 referral gift card program. Best for: homeowners who want a manufacturer rather than a franchise and value quick turnaround.

The Container Store (Elfa, Preston)

Where: Rockville and Annapolis stores only; no Baltimore location. Now owned by Bed Bath & Beyond after a 2024 bankruptcy and a 2026 acquisition. Tier: Elfa is the value line (steel, wall-hung, self-install possible, from about $800 for a closet before installation). Preston is the luxury wood line from roughly $10,000 installed. Installation runs about a third of the system cost. Strengths: Elfa is unbeatable for adjustable pantry, garage and kids' closets on a budget, with annual 25 to 35 percent sales. Watch for: a $50 measuring fee, moving parts and installation warranted for one year only, no Baltimore showroom, and ongoing corporate change. Best for: Elfa reach-ins and pantries; Preston if you are near Annapolis or Rockville.

Local independents (Chesapeake Closets, cabinetmakers, millwork shops)

Tier: Mid to luxury depending on the shop. Strengths: family ownership, transferable lifetime warranties in some cases, free 3D design, and the ability to build in solid wood or match historic millwork. A Baltimore homeowner on a national design forum reported paying a local cabinetmaker about half the franchise quotes for a solid-ash walk-in. Watch for: capacity limits, longer lead times in busy months, and less polished sales processes. Best for: historic homes in Roland Park, Guilford, Catonsville and the Annapolis Historic District, and anyone who wants to buy from the people who build it.
